National Orthodontic Week 22nd-28th March 2010

February 18th, 2010

NOW you can have the smile you have always wanted

NOW stands for National Orthodontic Week and the first NOW will be celebrated during the week of 22 – 28 March 2010.

Orthodontics is a special kind of dentistry concerned with the growth of the teeth, jaws and face.  Nearly one million people of all ages started having orthodontic treatment last year in the UK.  Orthodontic treatment is about making the best of your teeth; it’s about improving the harmony of your mouth and jaws. Once you can bite together correctly, you can eat more comfortably and care for your teeth and gums more easily.  Orthodontics is all about creating a natural, healthy smile.

NOW is the brainchild of the British Orthodontic Society (BOS), a charity which promotes the very best in education, research and care of patients. The campaign has been created to focus attention on the ways the look and function of your teeth can be improved; providing you with clear, trustworthy and impartial information about orthodontic treatment and encouraging you to find out more … NOW.

A new website www.nowsmile.org has been created and you can log on NOW

to discover the National Orthodontic Week events taking place; find an orthodontist in your area; read 12 information leaflets produced by the BOS about different aspects of orthodontic treatment and enter a competition to win a digital photograph frame (on which perhaps to display your beautiful new smiles!).

On the site you will find the results of a BOS survey conducted by You Gov’ to discover consumer attitudes towards their mouths, smiles and appearances.  You will also read some inspiring stories about how orthodontics has changed lives; how people have overcome bullying and depression thanks to their orthodontist and how one woman had treatment in her late 70’s, who shows you it is never too late to get the natural healthy smile you have always wanted.

You can also view a short film all about orthodontics, – viewing it could be the best three minutes you ever spend – you never know it could change your life!

During NOW The Orthodontic Centre will be organising Free consultations on a first come first served basis that can be booked for the morning of the 24th and 25th March.

Britain is one of the only countries in the world where orthodontic treatment is available free on the NHS to young people under the age of 18, depending on the severity of their case.  In addition, new technologies have meant that orthodontic treatment can now be discrete and more accessible to a wider range of people, no matter their age.  To find out more NOW visit www.nowsmile.org.

Orthodontics – An introduction for patients

General information about orthodontics

Orthodontics, the branch of dentistry concerned with the growth of the teeth, jaws and face, is in high demand. Nearly one million people in the UK started having orthodontics last year and more adults than ever before are wanting treatment. Why? Orthodontic treatment is about making the best of your teeth; it’s about improving the harmony of your mouth and jaws. Once you can bite together correctly, you can eat more comfortably and care for your teeth and gums more easily. And your smile will benefit immensely!

The Starting Point

Most courses of orthodontic treatment begin with a referral from a general dentist to a specialist. Depending on what treatment is needed, most patients are seen by a specialist in a local practice or by a consultant in hospital. Some patients are treated by dentists with extra training and experience to treat the milder cases.

These are some of the most common reasons for a referral:

  • Protruding upper front teeth - one of the most common dental problems
  • Crowding – a narrow jaw may mean there is not enough room for your teeth, resulting in crowding. Conversely, some patients have significant gaps between their teeth.
  • Asymmetry – particularly when the centre lines of the upper and lower front teeth do not match, perhaps because the teeth have drifted or the position of the jaw has shifted.
  • A deep bite – when your upper teeth cover the lower teeth too much
  • A reverse bite – when your upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth
  • An open bite – when your front teeth remain apart when your back teeth meet; the tongue is often still visible between the upper and lower front teeth.
  • Impacted teeth – in some patients, secondary teeth come through in the wrong position or do not erupt at all. Orthodontic treatment can help bring these teeth into the correct position.
Getting Treatment
Every patient needs tailor-made treatment, planned by the orthodontist and agreed with you, the patient. In order to decide what treatment is required for you, your orthodontist will need to carry out a full assessment of your teeth which is likely to include x-rays, impressions (moulds of the teeth) and photographs. Treatment can take more than two years so it is important you are happy from the outset with what is recommended. Braces are almost always needed. Those which are used most often are:A fixed brace – this is the most common type of brace today, often known as “train tracks”. Brackets are glued onto the teeth and linked by wires. Small elastic hoops are often used to hold the wire in position. The wires exert gentle pressure to move the teeth into a new position. The brackets can be metal, ceramic or even gold and the elastic hoops come in many colours.A removable brace – this is sometimes used for correcting a simple problem, such as moving a single tooth or expanding the dental arch. It has a plastic baseplate with wires and springs attached. Removable braces need to be worn all the time except for cleaning or sport.Functional appliances – these are used to harness the growth of the jaws and improve way the upper and lower teeth meet. There are several designs all of which fit on to both the upper and lower teeth and hold the lower jaw forward. They are mostly removable but should be worn as near to full-time as possible

Retainers – at the end of treatment, all patients should wear retainers to hold their teeth in the new position. These can be removable or fixed and are an important part of treatment.

Orthodontic Therapists

September 29th, 2009

The Orthodontic Centre is proud to announce that Kirsty Richardson has passed her final exam and joined Sara Calder as an Orthodontic Therapist. Kirsty, like Sara, studied at Leeds University Dental School and completed her clinical training here at the Centre as part of a joint programme. On the same course was Michelle Giles from the Orthodontic unit at Montagu Hospital. Michelle studied one day a week with us and Kirsty spent one day a week at the hospital as part of a co-operative project. Michelle passed as well and is now working between The Orthodontic Centre and The Orthodontic unit at The Montagu Hospital in Mexborough.

We have been at the forefront of the introduction of OT’s in the UK. Damian has lectured to various groups and has been asked to host a study session at The British Orthodontic Conference in Edinburgh later this month. OT’s will give us much more flexibility in treatment delivery and allow the Orthodontists more time to plan and supervise cases. We are also happy to announce that Becky Carney started her Orthodontic Therapist Course last month at Warwick University.

We are now entering the final phase of our practice refurbishment with extension of the reception and waiting area. The refurbishment has allowed us to fully embrace the new working patterns; we have adopted the North American style of practice with imported equipment and a larger open plan clinic. The change has been difficult, but we are getting there all thanks to our excellent staff, wonderful patients and you guys.

NHS Numbers

September 28th, 2009

We will be adding the NHS number onto our referral pads from dentists at the next reprint and have asked them to provide us with that information where it is available. We will also be capturing this information from you the patient. This is to come in line with the recent request to use this information as a further means of identifying the correct person within the NHS.

Please help us if asked for this information in the future. It will become an important number as you will be asked for it during any treatment or check up within the Health Service.

The Final Phase of the Building Work

September 28th, 2009

We started  the final phase of our refurbishment here at Chequer Road when we knocked down part of the wall between No.1 and No.3. This will give us a larger reception and put an end to those days when it seems like a coach party has turned up and everyone is trying to get in to be seen. The journey will have taken us a year but we will have achieved a complete transformation without any patient days lost.
